Andreea Cristea was walking along Westminster Bridge with her boyfriend, Andrei Burnaz, chatting happily together about their holiday. Despite the constant flow of the traffic moving past them and the many people on the bridge, it seemed to them as if their world was detached from all of that.
In a split second there was something wrong though. If time could have been slowed down for that moment both Andreea and Andrei knew that something was almost upon them when they heard what sounded like a car hitting something behind them. In that infinitesimal moment when they were trying to make sense of this distinct sound the answer came quite literally crashing into their world.
The car driven by Khalid Masood ran over Andrei’s foot and hit Andreea, full force, propelling her over the side of Westminster Bridge and into the River Thames.
All of a sudden Andreea found herself hurled through the air with her body screaming out in pain.
Then she hit the water.
Andreea lost consciousness and floated down the river; rescued by the crew of the Millennium Diamond minutes later.
Andreea never regained consciousness and sadly her life support was switched off Thursday 6th April 2017.
Our lives can change in a moment. That moment may not come today or tomorrow but it will come. We have this tendency to think that tomorrow will be the same as today and it was yesterday. One day will flow into the next as part of time’s never stopping current.
Some people live for next Friday when they can go out with their mates and talk about other people and what’s going on in their lives, for others it is the next time they are seeing their family and for others it’s the next time they are seeing their partner.
Whatever it is that you are looking forward to doing this next week, month or year, one thing is not certain; and that’s tomorrow’s plans. Christ Jesus said,
Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” James 4:13
The point here is that nothing is certain in this life. Yes we can make plans but the only thing in life that is certain is God’s love for us,
“For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.” Romans 14:9
Your life, my life, can change in a moment and sometimes these moments can be life changing or even life limiting. If we have not placed our trust in Christ Jesus then we will never have certainty in this life. It is only with accepting the life that Christ Jesus offers through His death that we can live truly not worrying about tomorrow. As Jesus said Himself,
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34
How can we receive this new life from God? The Bible simply puts it,
“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10
It’s as simple as that. In a moment we can be changed from a life without any real certainty to one that is full of hope, life and eternal security through God’s Son Christ Jesus.
This Easter allow the simple message of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for all of humanity to change our hearts.
It only takes a moment.
